Imlie discovers that Nirmala concealed her exam admit card. Nirmala confesses, explaining that she hid it to protect the family’s reputation. She argues that Imlie, being illiterate, would bring shame upon the family once she completes her studies, as she might disrespect Indira and other elders. Nirmala also claims that Imlie will refuse to do any household chores. Despite Imlie’s protests, Nirmala returns the admit card.
Indira intervenes, taking the admit card and confronting Surya with their family’s tradition that women manage the household. She questions whether Imlie will fulfill these responsibilities after her education. However, Imlie refuses, expressing her aspiration to excel academically and become a journalist. In response, Indira tears up the admit card, declaring that such an attitude has no place in their home.
Imlie breaks down upon seeing the torn pieces of her admit card and attempts to piece them back together. Hemalatha approaches her, offering comfort, and mentions that while Indira may not be entirely wrong, she would appreciate it if Imlie served the family dutifully and fulfilled her responsibilities.
Imlie responds by stating that true service is akin to serving God and that blindly obeying someone is not right. Hemalatha questions whether she believes fulfilling responsibilities is wrong, sharing her own choice to prioritize her husband and child over lucrative dance performance offers after marriage.
Imlie then delves into a discussion about women’s empowerment and the importance of not tolerating mistreatment from husbands and families.
Surya contacts the education board to request a duplicate admit card. Arjun approaches him, suggesting that he should have supported Anjali and opposed Indira and Nirmala instead. Surya explains that he is focused on finding a solution rather than creating more issues at home.
Mahesh joins them, echoing Surya’s sentiment. He dismisses the importance of women’s demands, claiming that women always complain but eventually quiet down. He even cites his past success in silencing Hemalatha’s complaints. Arjun defends his mother, asking Mahesh not to speak ill of her. Angered, Mahesh yells at Arjun and dismisses him before turning back to teach Surya.
Imlie calls Pallo to share how Indira tore her admit card. Pallo responds by advising Imlie to not pursue her studies if her mother-in-law is against it, warning her not to jeopardize her marriage or break Bulbul’s alliance back home. Imlie asserts her right to education and work, but Pallo remains unsympathetic. Disheartened, Imlie returns to working in the kitchen.
Surya approaches her and expresses a desire to talk. Imlie, feeling bitter, remarks that she is always available to listen to him now, sarcastically highlighting his lack of support. Surya interrupts her, holding her hand, and leads her outside. He then informs the family that he plans to accompany Imlie to Banaras the next day. When questioned about the purpose of the trip, Surya explains that he intends to visit the education board’s head office in Banaras to expedite the process of obtaining a duplicate admit card.
CJ queries the necessity of the trip, to which Surya explains the lengthy procedure involved in reapplying for the duplicate admit card. Mahesh criticizes Surya for ignoring his advice to disregard women’s demands. Surya defends his decision, stating that women, like men, deserve respect for their contributions to the household and society.
